3.5Miranda was on holiday in Italy when she walked into an international intrigue and was shot in the head She was nursed back to health by an Italian bandit, Dante, but never saw his face as she recovered her eye sight Now she s well and looking to hire a secretary to accompany her on her travels so she can return to Dante She ends up hiring Andrew MacGregor MacLeod , a spy who is with her to protect her The two develop a friendship, but when Miranda learns who Andrew really is, she feels betrayed and manipulated She agrees to a fake engagement to lure the potential assassins out, so she can participate in their games on her terms For his part, Andrew is intrigued by Miranda, even though he knows to keep his distance from her Not only to protect her, but to protect his heart, for when she learns his multiple, dark secrets, she ll kick him out of her life This was pretty good I liked Andrew he felt dark and sort of dangerous, but at the same time like he was bowled over with love for Miranda But his maudlin attitude at times annoyed he was always focused on how he couldn t be lovable Miranda was feisty and enjoyable as a heroine She stood up for what she wanted and wasn t TSTL about it She could still be emotional and dramatic at times, but not irritatingly so I really like that she smacked Andrew in the face with his double standard regarding her virginity These two together let s say their chemistry was subtle and at times almost not there There s definitely a friendship there though They spend a majority of the story avoiding each other and being chaperoned, so there aren t many love scenes so the steam factor here is pretty low The ending was pretty hasty as well, and I kind of felt like I was left hanging regarding Andrew and Court s relationship did they ever make up, come to terms or discuss their differences

says Lady Miranda Hartwell does not care what society thinks and if she wishes to employ a male personal secretary, she will Of course it was not her specific intention to hire one as devastatingly handsome as Andrew MacGregor And she certainly never dreamed she d be so attracted to this fiery cauldron of secrets who seems oddly, intriguingly familiar Andrew MacLeod is ready to abandon his life as a master spy, until he is talked into accepting one final assignment Protecting the lovely, independent Miranda will not be easy, for the lady must notice how he is always there to rescue her from the increasingly troubling accidents in her home And surely she can feel the heat of the passion she inspires within him which may prove a fatal distraction, now that he s drawn the unsuspecting beauty into a most dangerous game clucks her tongue a couple of times I m vaguely remembering this I remember the first half of the book OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, RIGHT The one with the mysterious Italian guy named Dante Of course Oh, yes Okay, this book was Victorian and Andrew was a spy and now he feels like he s obliged to protect Miranda, so he applies to be her secretary traveling companion This was one of those books where you re reading and you re like, Wait a second WHAT What s he TALKING about Am I EVER going to understand what happened Where the back story of the characters is kinda mysterious, and you find out SLOWLY what s ACTUALLY going on It was very very intriguing The whole Dante thing I was like, WHO THE HELL IS THIS DANTE GUY AND WHY DO BOTH ANDREW AND MIRANDA KEEP THINKING ABOUT THEM Very good Very suspenseful 4 stars, for sure.
